psalm 16: the refuge of the entitled

you are my refuge
even when i cannot feel
your presence.
you are always with me
and i don’t even know
your name.

lead me away from the
refuge of the entitled:
those who claim you
for themselves alone,
who drop your name hoping
to gain your exclusive favor,
who offer up sacrifices
on the altar of their
own insecurity.

don’t let practice the
religion of confinement.
if you ever see me
building a prison to
contain your infinite grace,
won’t you grant me the
courage to tear it
down to the ground
brick by
idolatrous brick.

  1. Gwenan says:

Set this one to music, and sing it from the mountaintops! (or from Ridge AVenue, at least.)
