psalm 29: i hear your voice

i hear your voice shimmering on
the surface of the water
and thundering out of the
heart of the deepest oceans.
i hear your whisper breezing
through the tall grass, your
roar shattering the
mightiest cedars.

i hear you in the first
cry of a newborn and in the
death rattle of a departing soul.
i hear you in the crack of
a splitting atom and the
explosion of a distant star
long since extinguished.

i hear your voice in the
laughter of children and in
mother’s broken cry of grief –
in calm before the
storm and the quiet resolve
reborn after all we’ve ever
known has been washed away.
