psalm 34: a purer offering

why do you wish for
long life and many more
years of blessing
and good fortune?

can’t you see the
idolatrous fire burning
at the center of
your heart’s desire?
can’t you see your desperate
need is nothing but
a sacrifice offered
in vain?

just take hold of your fears,
and place them on the altar.
watch them smolder into
ash, the black smoke
curling and disappearing
into the heavens.

then if you’re searching
for a purer offering,
try this:

embrace goodness.
do the work of justice.
seek peace and
pursue it.
