psalm 35: the good fight

please don’t fight my
battles for me, when i
plead for rescue
no matter how pitifully,
don’t you dare try
and save me.

don’t be fooled
by my pious pronouncements
of pacifism, trust me,
my conscientious objections
are simply desperate
attempts to avoid the wars
that are mine alone
to wage.

all i ask is that you
show me how to fight
the good fight,
that you join
your voice with mine
when i let loose my
battle cry.

just promise me that
you will be with me when
i fall, that you help me
bind my bloody wounds.
and when armistice is
finally declared you will
show me the way of
transformation and
lend me your shoulder
as i slowly limp
my way home.
