psalm 39: the true measure of my life

such an impossibly fragile
life: we breathe out
then we disappear,
we’re gone like shadows
in the morning light.

so i can’t help but ask:
why does my life matter
to you?
why should this brief,
glancing existence
amount to anything
in your sight?
why would you even bother
to remember me
after i’m gone?

show me how to take
the true measure of
my life, this impossibly
ephemeral moment in time.
reassure me that
i’ve made a difference
before all i’ve ever known vanishes
into your darkness.
